The second operation was 3 months later on the back of the legs, buttocks and low back where another 12000cc of lipedema was removed.

What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic medical condition where fat cells build up abnormally, most often in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes arms and abdomen.

In bodies with lipedema, fat cells are unable to mobilize calories after they are stored because they lack the appropriate hormonal receptors. This leads to “one way” fat cells that tend to get bigger and bigger with time.

One way fat cells can also grow even larger when more calories are consumed, meaning that lipedema tissue is frequently resistant to diet, exercise, weight loss drugs, and even weight loss surgery. The most effective method for getting rid of lipedema cells is surgical removal by way of liposuction and manual extraction.

Lipedema typically affects women and often runs in families. By examining relatives who have the disease at later stages in life, patients may be able to predict how their lipedema will develop.

Without lipedema surgery in Tuscon, symptoms will likely worsen over time. These symptoms include:

  • Enlarged legs and/or arms that are disproportionate to the rest of the body.
  • Pain, tenderness, or easy bruising in affected areas.
  • Heaviness, swelling, or tightness in the limbs.
  • Fatigue when walking or standing.
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit.

What Triggers Lipedema?

While experts are not entirely sure why lipedema develops, research shows genetics and hormones may be the cause. Many patients notice symptoms beginning or worsening during times of hormonal change, such as:

  • Puberty – this critical development stage often coincides with the first onset of visible symptoms.
  • Pregnancy – Symptoms of pregnancy, like weight gain and fluid changes, may trigger progression.
  • Perimenopause and menopause – During these processes, patients experience changes in estrogen and progesterone levels, which may worsen lipedema symptoms.
  • Hormonal therapies (e.g., birth control, fertility treatments, HRT) – in some cases, lipedema may flare or accelerate during hormonal therapies.

These triggers suggest that estrogen and other hormones play an important role in how lipedema develops and progresses.

Lipedema and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

Many patients with lipedema also have connective tissue disorders, typically hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). Both lipedema and hEDS involve problems with collagen and tissue support, which may explain why they often appear together.

Signs of EDS in Lipedema Patients include:

Tips for Diagnosing EDS

Doctors may use the Beighton Score to test flexibility and hypermobility. This includes checking if you can:

  • Bend your pinky finger back beyond 90°.
  • Bend your thumb to touch your forearm.
  • Hyperextend elbows or knees beyond 10°.
  • Place your palms flat on the floor with knees straight.

As your provider performs this test, they may assign points based on how freely your joints move. A score of 5 or more out of 9 suggests generalized joint hypermobility. If a provider suspects you have EDS, they may make a referral to a geneticist, rheumatologist, or connective tissue specialist.

Why This Matters for Lipedema

It’s important to consider whether patients have EDS before treating lipedema, because this joint condition may affect the treatment process. Patients with EDS may bruise more easily and heal more slowly after lipedema surgery in Tuscon.

We may also need to adjust compression garments for comfort. The physical therapy process changes as well—therapists should focus on joint stabilization and safe exercise. Pain and fatigue management are especially important.

Stages of Lipedema

Lipedema is usually described in four stages, based on changes in skin and fat tissue:

Stage 1

  • Skin is smooth.
  • Fat feels soft, with small nodules under the surface.
  • Legs or arms may look disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body.

Stage 2:

  • Skin surface becomes uneven or “dimpled” (similar to cellulite).
  • Larger, tangible nodules form
  • Swelling and pain become more noticeable.

Stage 3:

  • Skin and fat tissue become more fibrotic (firm and nodular).
  • Legs/arms develop large overhangs or folds of tissue.
  • Mobility may be more limited, and lymphatic issues often appear.

Stage 4 (sometimes called lipo-lymphedema):

  • Lipedema is combined with secondary lymphedema (lymphatic swelling).
  • Severe tissue overgrowth, swelling, and disability may occur.

As lipedema develops, it can impact the patient’s mobility and quality of life. Early intervention with conservative treatments and/or lipedema surgery can slow or prevent progression to later stages.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Lipedema

Our medical experts can offer alternatives to lipedema surgery in Tuscon. While these resources do not remove diseased fat, they can improve symptoms.

Surgical Treatment for Lipedema

The most effective treatment for removing diseased fat is liposuction for lipedema (lipedema reduction surgery). Surgeons use techniques, often tumescent anesthesia and vibration-assisted or water-assisted cannulas, to carefully remove lipedema fat while protecting lymphatic vessels. Occasionally, surgeons may use technologies such as VASER, which uses ultrasound energy to liquify fat for easier removal. They may also pair the surgery with Renuvion, a radiofrequency treatment that tightens loose skin.

Manual Extraction

Manual extraction is another effective method for lipedema surgery in Tuscon. This process involves gently squeezing or removing fatty nodules and fibrotic tissue through the small incisions created for liposuction. Manual extraction can help release stubborn fat clusters that are too firm or fibrotic to be removed by suction alone.

This combination approach may:

  • Allow for more complete removal of diseased fat and nodules.
  • Improve comfort and mobility.
  • Help the patient achieve smoother results, especially in Lipedema’s advanced stages.

Benefits of Surgery

There are many reasons why patients should consider lipedema surgery in Tuscon to treat this chronic condition, including:

  • Reduction of pain, heaviness, and swelling.
  • Improved mobility and endurance.
  • Better body proportions and clothing fit.
  • Slowing or stopping disease progression.
  • Improved self-confidence and quality of life.

Risks of Surgery

Of course, surgery is not without its risks. Patients who elect to receive lipedema surgery in Tuscon may encounter:

  • Bleeding, infection, or poor wound healing.
  • Numbness or nerve irritation.
  • Fluid collections (seromas or hematomas).
  • Scarring or uneven skin surface.
  • Blood clots (rare but serious).
  • Complications stemming from anesthesia

Patients may also require additional surgeries following their initial procedure.

In summary, lipedema is a chronic fat disorder influenced by hormonal changes and genetics. It progresses in stages (1–4), from soft nodules and smooth skin to severe tissue overgrowth and lymphedema.

Non-surgical treatments (compression, massage, pumps, nutrition, exercise) help manage symptoms, but surgery (liposuction for lipedema and sometimes manual extraction) is the only treatment method that removes diseased fat and to greatly improve quality of life. Every treatment has risks and benefits, and surgery is a personal choice. If you have any questions about lipedema surgery in Tuscon, please reach out to our team!
