Breast reduction is a surgical procedure for reducing the size of breasts by removing excess breast fat, skin, and glandular tissue. The purpose is to achieve a more proportionate profile for women with oversized breasts, as well as resolve issues such as neck and back pain and posture problems.

Light. Manageable. And All Yours

Large, heavy breasts can cause pain, self-consciousness and low self-esteem. If your breasts are preventing you from leading your best life, Dr. Larson's Tucson breast reduction may be in your best interest.

It’s common for women with large breasts to feel weighed down by their chests – both literally and figuratively. By removing a precise amount of excess tissue, Dr. Larson can sculpt breasts that are still feminine and beautiful – but much easier to manage.

After a breast reduction with Dr. Larson, you can expect a chest that is:

  • Smaller + firmer
  • More proportionate to the rest of your body
  • Symmetrical + balanced

Signs your breasts are too large for your body

  • Shoulder indentations from bra straps
  • Irritated skin beneath the breasts
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Difficulty exercising
  • Shortness of breath
  • Posture problems

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Your Tucson breast reduction will be done under general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep and unable to feel any pain or discomfort. Dr. Larson will use one of three techniques for your procedure:

Anchor

The anchor is the standard breast reduction technique. As the most invasive method, it involves one or more incisions around the nipple, down the front of the breast and along the breast crease. After the excess tissue is removed, the skin underneath the breast is sewn together and the incisions closed. It tends to be best for our Tucson clients with extremely large breasts, as it allows for maximum tissue and skin removal.

Vertical

The vertical technique involves an incision around the nipple and down the front of the breast. After the excess tissue is removed, Dr. Larson will reposition the nipples higher on the breasts, which will create a perkier, more youthful appearance.

It’s a popular option among our Tucson clients because it allows for significant tissue removal, but is associated with a smaller scar than the anchor. It’s ideal for women who need a moderate reduction in breast size. The incisions are identical to those used for what is called the “lollipop technique” when a breast lift is being performed, because of the lollipop shape of the incisions.

Scarless

The scarless breast reduction is done with liposuction and, despite the name, it is actually “virtually scarless,” meaning that the resulting scars are basically undetectable once they have healed. This is because the liposuction technique involves only two to three very tiny incisions—about ¼ inch each—and they are hidden in the armpit or breast crease. Through that opening, Dr. Larson will insert a cannula to gently break up and remove volume. This procedure has beautiful reshaping benefits and is best for patients who suffer from fatty breast tissue – not glandular development.

Breast Reduction + Lift

A Tucson breast reduction is designed to remove unwanted volume, while a breast lift elevates and repositions sagging tissue. When the two procedures are combined, Dr. Larson is able to sculpt smaller breasts that are also perky and youthful.

In addition, he can reshape and reposition the areola for a comprehensive transformation. Because the breast is also lifted, the dual procedure may result in smaller scars.

Why choose Dr. Larson for breast reduction in Tucson?

Breast reduction surgery is a fairly common procedure, and Dr. Larson has performed many such successful procedures. But beyond the usual training for a cosmetic surgeon, he has done a great deal of advanced training in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, under some of most prestigious practitioner. This involves a much more in-depth understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the breast, so you can be confident in his ability to create an aesthetic outcome.

What is involved in the recovery after breast reduction surgery?

You will be sent home with gauze and steri-strips under a support bra. While Dr. Larson will give you individualized instructions, be aware of the following general points:

  • You can shower on the second day after surgery.
  • Most sutures will be absorbable and not require removal.
  • Your breasts may be tender for several weeks, but this can be controlled with pain medication.
  • Patients typically return to work within one to two weeks, if it is not physically strenuous.
  • A bra should be worn throughout the healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a cannula?

A cannula is a hollow, flexible surgical tube that can be inserted in the body to remove fluids or tissue.

What test will be done to see if i am a candidate for a scarless breast reduction?

Since a scarless breast reduction is performed using liposuction, it is for men and women who are having fatty tissue removed, rather than glandular tissue. A mammogram will be done to determine what kind of tissue would be involved and whether you are a candidate for the scarless technique.

How long does breast reduction surgery take?

The length of the procedure, of course, depends on which technique is used and the amount of tissue being removed. It typically takes three to five hours and can be done on an outpatient basis.
